Waltz

Character of the Music and the Dance

Waltz is generally considered a slow dance that likes to reflect the beauty of life or the grace of sorrow. Songs will generally speak about love and joy or sorrow and loss. The dance constantly travels around a room with lots of rising, falling, and spinning along the way.

Common Instruments

Piano, Violin, Drums, Guitar

Rhytmical Themes

It is commonly found that there is a Soft Boom sound followed by two ticking sounds. The ticking sounds can also just be a raise in pitch. Boom, Tick, Tick. Waltz and Viennese Waltz are the only dances in 3/4 Time. (Meaning you are always dancing in steps of 3.)

Sample Descriptions

TRADITIONAL:
Notice the Piano hits the first beat then the Cymbal from the drums creates the "tick, tick" for the second two beats

SOFT:
Plenty of Waltz music is played very softly and can be hard to hear the subtle strums that make up the Boom Tick Tick. However once again the Piano hits the first beat and the Drums hit the second two beats.

COUNTRY:
This one uses a stringed instrument to hit the first beat instead of a piano.
